TREASURE – FAMILY IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY
Shortly after the collapse of the Iron Curtain, New York music journalist Ruth Rothwax (LENA DUNHAM) embarks on a journey to Poland with her father Edek (STEPHEN FRY) to research the history of her Jewish family. For Edek, who survived the Holocaust, this is the first time he has returned to his childhood home. While Ruth is determined to understand the wounds of the past and her parents’ traumas, the fun-loving Edek would rather live in the present and leave the past behind. In the process, he messes up Ruth’s plans and provides some unexpectedly funny moments. During this eventful week, old family secrets come to light and the two grow closer in a way that transforms their fragile relationship into a deeper bond.
German director and screenwriter Julia von Heinz (HANNAS REISE, UND MORGEN DIE GANZE WELT) has realized her most ambitious project to date with the film adaptation of the novel “Too Many Men” by bestselling author Lily Brett. Lena Dunham, known from the cult series “Girls”, and the celebrated British actor Stephen Fry (“The Dropout”, WILDE) shine in the leading roles. By confronting their painful family history, father and daughter finally reconnect during their journey. Julia von Heinz directs this touching family story with great sensitivity and warm humor.
The film TREASURE – FAMILY IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY celebrated its world premiere at this year’s 74th Berlin International Film Festival in the Berlinale Special GALA section and forms the conclusion of Julia von Heinz’ Aftermath trilogy, which deals with the consequences of the Holocaust for future generations.
