When Ingeborg Bachmann (VICKY KRIEPS) and Swiss writer Max Frisch (RONALD ZEHRFELD) meet in Paris in 1958, it is the beginning of a passionate and destructive love story. For four years, the two lead a grueling relationship that begins in Paris and leads via Zurich to Rome. But artistic disputes and the devouring jealousy of Max Frisch begin to gradually destroy the harmony.
Years later, Ingeborg Bachmann cannot let go of the memory of her love for Max Frisch. On a trip to the desert, she tries to come to terms with her relationship with Max Frisch and slowly detach herself from it.
After Rosa Luxemburg and Hannah Arendt, Margarethe von Trotta once again dedicates herself to a female light figure of the 20th century in INGEBORG BACHMANN – REISE IN DIE WÜSTE: The Austrian poet, who died tragically in 1973 at the age of only 47, is still considered one of the most important female poets of the 20th century. Starring Vicky Krieps (CORSAGE, BERGMAN ISLAND) and Ronald Zehrfeld (BARBARA), von Trotta’s own screenplay traces the toxic relationship of Ingeborg Bachmann and Swiss literary figure Max Frisch in a film as elegant as it is stirring, made at great expense in six countries.
The film celebrated its world premiere in competition at this year’s 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. The film was produced by tellfilm, AMOUR FOU Vienna, Heimatfilm and AMOUR FOU Luxembourg and was distributed jointly by MFA and Alamode.
