Ten years ago, I made a decision that changed my life: I left Germany to work remotely from Mexico. What sounded like an adventure to many at the time has now become a reality for many people under the term New Work. But it wasn’t always easy to get there – especially as a woman. This article is intended to inspire, motivate and encourage women not only to dream their dreams, but also to make them come true.
New Work – more than just working from home
New Work is often equated with remote work or working from home. But it’s about much more: freedom, flexibility, personal responsibility and a sense of purpose at work. For me, New Work meant the opportunity to work independently of a fixed location and to develop my professional skills without being trapped in traditional structures. However, it was also a challenge to strengthen my own discipline, create structures and network successfully despite the physical distance.
10 years of remote work in Mexico – My learnings
Flexibility is both a curse and a blessing: on the one hand, it’s great to be able to organize your day as you wish. On the other hand, it also means that there are no traditional working hours – and therefore no clear separation between work and leisure time. My tip: Fixed routines help enormously to stay productive and maintain a good work-life balance at the same time.
Networks are worth their weight in gold: I realized early on that successful remote working does not mean being alone. Rather, it’s about actively networking, both online and offline. The LinkedIn groups, social meetings and summits are examples of how important it is to exchange ideas with like-minded people and support each other.
Self-promotion is crucial (especially for women): as a woman in particular, I have learned that I need to communicate my successes with confidence. Far too often we tend to play down our achievements or belittle ourselves. My advice: become aware of your value and show it – be it through social media, blog articles or by sharing in networks.
Why we as women should stand up for our dreams
New Work offers opportunities, but only if we actively seize them. We need to stop waiting for the “perfect opportunity” or letting doubts hold us back. If you want to change something, you have to take the first step yourself.
I have made it my mission to encourage women to go their own way – be it by working remotely, starting their own business or simply having the courage to try out new opportunities. What is your dream? Perhaps it’s time to not only dream it, but also live it.
Let’s network!
