Women are still underrepresented in management positions – but targeted measures can change this. Visibility, for example, is an important key to this. In an exclusive workshop for the Step into your Power women’s network of a leading construction company, I was able to shed light on precisely this topic with 90 committed women and would like to share the findings here.
Why is visibility crucial?
Many people believe that performance alone is enough for career advancement. But studies show: Only 10 % of success is based on performance, while 30 % is due to image and a full 60 % to visibility. This insight, known from Empowering Yourself, The Organizational Game Revealed by Harvey C. Coleman, was our starting point. Those who are noticed in the organization have a better chance of promotion.
The power of perception
People perceive 83% of their environment visually. The non-verbal level also dominates communication: 55% body language, 38% voice and only 7% content count. This means that first impressions and our appearance have a significant influence on how we are perceived. In the workshop, we therefore analyzed our external appearance, body language and digital presence.
Strategic communication and networking
In addition to personal appearance, targeted communication is essential. The participants reflected on their personality strengths using the Insights model and learned how they can consciously control their language and attitude. We also explored the importance of strategic networking: those who are visible are more likely to be considered in management decisions.
Practical impulses for everyday life
A special focus was placed on digital presence. Camera settings, background, light and sound – all of these influence how professionally we are perceived. Through individual feedback, the participants were able to gain valuable insights for their online meetings and presentations. Have you ever done this? How about grabbing a colleague and talking about your digital presence together?
Conclusion: actively use visibility
Whether in meetings, presentations or online formats – it is crucial to actively shape your own visibility. The women in the Step into your Power network received valuable ideas on how to position themselves more strongly in their companies. And I hope that I was able to give you some exciting figures and suggestions for your professional success.
THOSE WHO SHOW THEMSELVES ARE SEEN. THOSE WHO ARE SEEN ARE NOTICED. THOSE WHO ARE NOTICED ARE PROMOTED.
So take your visibility boldly into your own hands and ensure your professional success.
