Make the decision – before life does it for you

Why clear decisions are more important today thanever.

Between hesitation and silence – what is missing today

It often starts harmlessly: an exciting conversation, a possible next step, an offer on the table. And then: silence. No rejection. No commitment. No yes, no no. Just a vacuum.

What is overlooked here: Not making a decision is also a decision. Just one that does not take responsibility.

I am currently experiencing this frequently in professional processes, in projects, but also in my personal environment. People don’t get back to me, don’t want to “commit themselves yet”, hope that something will “work itself out”. This is precisely the problem: we live in a world full of possibilities, but also full of non-commitment.

Decisions have become a luxury today

In times of uncertainty, permanent crisis and sensory overload, hesitation seems almost understandable. Those who make decisions take risks. Those who commit themselves make themselves vulnerable. Those who say yes must stand by their no elsewhere. But this is precisely why we need people who take a stand now more than ever. Who say: I make up my mind. And I stand by it.

Because what you don’t decide, life will decide for you at some point. And that rarely feels good.

According to a recent study by the Allensbach Institute, around 40% of people find it difficult to make important decisions, especially when they have long-term consequences. At the same time, it is known that clarity in decision-making is a key factor for success, satisfaction and trust – both professionally and privately.

I know the feeling and have decided to do it anyway

I’m not writing this from the outside, but from personal experience. When I decided to emigrate to Mexico more than ten years ago, it wasn’t a spontaneous whim to drop out, but a conscious, long-term decision. And it was met with fierce resistance.

People tried to stop me. I was warned, ridiculed, sometimes even mocked. “From the castle to the bamboo hut,” I was told. And someone actually asked me seriously whether there were any normal houses and cars there at all.

What hit me the hardest was not the ignorance, but the attempt to talk me out of my decision because it didn’t fit the picture. In the image that others had of me. Or of what they call “reasonable”. But I left. Not because it was convenient, but because it felt right. And that’s exactly what changed my life: Not the country. But the decision.

Today, I don’t just build bridges, I also walk them

Today, as an interim management provider, I build real bridges between Germany and Mexico, not only geographically, but also culturally and economically. I accompany companies on their way into new markets, support them in finding strong temporary leaders and know from experience that when there is clarity, energy is created. And this energy moves.

At the same time, I have been working in B2B marketing for over 20 years and have achieved more impact than ever before with my strategy work for various industries in recent years. I generate visibility that really converts, for me and for my clients. And I can say with conviction: I’ve never been as successful, as healthy and as in touch with myself as I am today. Why? Because I stopped waiting for external permission. Because I have learned to take responsibility for my decisions, my ideas, my impact and because – despite all the resistance – I have decided to go my own way.

Those who make decisions take responsibility – also for others

If you avoid making decisions as an entrepreneur, manager or colleague, you are not only blocking yourself, you are also holding others back. Because clarity is a gift: it enables planning, trust and further development. Lack of clarity, on the other hand, paralyzes. It sends no signal. It’s a maybe that keeps doors open but doesn’t let anyone through. This is particularly fatal in business. People who bear responsibility are also role models in how they communicate. A clear no is always better than an endless see-saw. A decision brings movement, even if it is uncomfortable.

Don’t make yourself smaller: make a decision

Maybe you have a project on your mind. Or a request that you’ve left unanswered for too long. Maybe you realize that you’re avoiding making a decision. Then read this sentence: You can decide. You can show yourself. You can take a stand. Because in the end, it’s not whether you did everything perfectly that counts, but whether you dared to stand up for yourself. The world changes through people who take action. Not by those who wait until something happens.

Conclusion: Clarity is a sign of strength

We need more people to make decisions again. Who say what they want. Who don’t leave others hanging. Who don’t wait for the perfect moment, but take responsibility, for themselves and for others.

Because if you don’t make a decision, you give up. On the power to act. On respect. And to the place that he or she could actually occupy.
